“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
As Christians, it is a tremendous encouragement to know that faithful friends consistently bring our names before God in prayer. Hearing a loved one say, “I’m praying for you” can bring great comfort, reassurance, and encouragement to our hearts.
Intercession, the act of praying to God on behalf of another, is a biblical command. God calls and expects His children to pray for one another. Yet God did not give us this command without first providing a model. Without a doubt, the best example of intercession in Scripture is Jesus Christ Himself.
The gospels record multiple times when Jesus prayed to God for others, but Hebrews 7:25 sheds an even greater light on Jesus’ intercession. This passage clearly reveals that Jesus “ever liveth to make intercession” for us.
Our Savior prays for us.
This is an incredible truth! Jesus Christ, the One Who healed the lame, gave sight to the blind, and raised the dead, is praying for us at all times. Even when our own prayer lives are severely lacking, Jesus Christ is faithful to lift up our names before God the Father.
Practically speaking, how does this truth impact our everyday lives? To begin, it brings a great deal of comfort to our hearts knowing that Jesus prays for us. Our names, our needs, and our cares are constantly on the mind and heart of Jesus as He continually speaks on our behalf to God.
Understanding Jesus’ intercession on our behalf should also motivate us to grow in our own prayer lives. If Jesus, the Son of God, considers it important to pray for others, would it not be wise for us to value intercession?
Jesus provides the perfect model of what it means to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). As we strive to follow His example of intercession, let us also find comfort and encouragement in the truth that our Savior prays for us.
Whether you are filled with joy or discouragement, Jesus is praying for you. Whether you are growing spiritually or falling beneath sin’s weight, Jesus is praying for you. When you sleep and when you rise, Jesus is praying for you. You are constantly on His heart and in His prayers.
Every moment of every day, Jesus is praying for you.
