Caring through Covid
It has been over six months since the implementation of stringent COVID-19 regulations had been placed here in Australia. These regulations have caused much debate culturally, politically, and even religiously. Though one could discuss the shortcomings and limitations of the season that we are in, we must continue to keep our focus on the main thing- people.
Here are three practical ways to remain focused on the edification and evangelization of those around us during this time of regulations.
Initially, we must focus on the people, not the process. As many churches have adapted within their church context, new regulations call from a more clinical approach to the church service. Those that come physically to church are met with a temperature monitor instead of a handshake and hug. As these practices limit the potential risk, it can also cause a sense of disconnect. An easy way of reducing this disconnect is to engage in informal conversation. Instead of rushing back to the car after the service, take the time and listen to the hurts and struggles that are easily hidden behind a face mask.
Care for the people, not only the process.
Additionally, keep in contact with your church. Amidst the technological advancements in communication and media, it is easy to forget the value of a phone call or a simple text. We live in a time where many are easily accessible, and yet we limit our times of influence to a Sunday service. I remember a time when I was struggling spiritually. I did what I needed to do, I was faithful to church, I ticked all the boxes, yet I felt that I was alone. A simple text from a dear brother caused me to look to Christ through my service and find my passion again.
Don’t underestimate the power of keeping in contact during this season.
Lastly, continue to share the gospel. God had not changed the commission due to COVID-19. The commission continues to propel us to share the gospel in all our walks of life. Here in Sydney, we found that soul-winning is not a scheduled hour but a way of life. We do not just happen to share the gospel; we must be purposeful and passionate. Many are hurting and looking for peace, so why are we limiting our impact on our communities? The gospel is still true, each soul is still valuable, and the opportunity is still available.
Take some time to share the gospel with those you meet each day.
The season we find ourselves today may seem daunting and even frightening, but let it not phase us from fulfilling God’s plan. Our focus must remain in edifying and strengthening the church and sharing the gospel to the fields, white, and ready to harvest.
