The Gift of Iron
Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpeneth iron: so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
One of the greatest gifts God has given to men is friends. The delight in conversation, the fun in spending time with, and the feeling of possessing value to someone all comes with having a true friend. What constitutes a real, true friend though?
According to Proverbs, a friend is someone who sharpens us, who figuratively “hits” us for our betterment, and who says the hard thing.
A real friend will tell you when you are wrong, why you are wrong, but all in love.
Here at Veritas, we are blessed to be surrounded with “iron”. God has given us the opportunity to grow in Him, and cultivate relationships that will help us do just that. As a friend “sharpens” their friend, it may not always feel good, but the Bible says that it “sharpeneth the countenance.” It betters us.
Hebrews 10:24 says, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.”
This week, I challenge you to choose one person from your class and reach out to them. Make a friend. See if they have any prayer requests, share with them a favorite verse of yours, and simply share the joy of the Lord with them.
God has given us the gift of friends for a reason and college is a place where lifelong friendships can be made.
Even though we are having college in an online setting, we still can, and should, use this opportunity to grow in the Lord by sharpening each other.
