The Christian life is a life of continually waiting. If you don’t believe me, just live a little longer, and you’ll quickly find out what I’m talking about.

One of the first times I knew I had to wait on the Lord was the time when I was thinking about a future spouse. I waited and prayed continually for two years until He confirmed who it was to be. However, today, I’d like to share with another example of waiting on God, and what we are supposed to do when we don’t know what to do.

As soon as I finished high school, I knew the Lord wanted me to continue my studies, and He led me to what I believe to be the best college of all, Veritas Baptist College. As I began my first year, I started to think about the future and where God would have me to preach. After all, since He called me to preach, He would have to show me where to preach, right? Well, time went on and I heard nothing from the Lord concerning life’s next step.

So here I am, longing to serve God, but not knowing where I’m supposed to go. I would be lying to you if I told you I did not get frustrated with the Lord at times. Things like “I’m not asking You to make me a millionaire,” and “I’m not praying for a brand-new truck” went through my mind often. After all, the only thing I wanted to know was where to serve the Lord with my life. Why wouldn’t He answer me? As I continued praying, I realized I needed to figure out what I’m supposed to do when I don’t know what to do.

My pastor preached a message not too long after that, and in his sermon, he made two of the most powerful statements that changed me completely. First, He said, “As long as you’re in God’s will, you won’t miss His will for your life.” Well, that doesn’t seem like a whole lot of help, doesn’t it? And it didn’t for me until I started to really think about it.

“As long as you’re in God’s will, you won’t miss

His will for your life.”

What is God’s will for my life now? It was to be a faithful church member, read my Bible, pray daily, and be the best Christian that I could be. If I stay in His will, there is no way that I’ll miss His future will for my life!

Secondly, my pastor said, “When you don’t know what to do, do what you know to do until God tells you what to do.” Kind of a tongue twisting sentence, isn’t it? But it’s such simple truth, it is amazing!

“When you don’t know what to do, do what you know to do until God tells you what to do.”

Are you in a place where you don’t know what to do next? Do what you know you’re supposed to do! Once again, this means praying, reading, being in church when it is church time, and being the Christian that the Lord longs for you to be!

Last month, the thing I was waiting on so long from the Lord came to pass, and He showed me the church I am supposed to serve in at this time in my life! I serve as the youth pastor, song leader, and pastor’s helper at Saint Amant Baptist Church in Louisiana! What kept me going until the Lord answered my prayer? Simply doing what I know to do until God showed me what to do next.

My dear friends, God is not a God who wants to hide Himself from us, and keep His will a secret from us.

He is a loving God, and a caring Father, who wants to know that we truly long to do His will.

The waiting period of a Christian’s life is simply a time of growing and proving to the Lord that we truly want to do His will!

Conclusion

So, if you don’t know what to do with your life at this moment, remember:

  1. As long as you’re in God’s will, you cannot miss His will for your life!
  2. When you don’t know what to do, do what you know to do until God tells you what to do next.
